Meta is preparing to take a big step in the world of wearable technology at its upcoming Connect 2025 conference. The company is expected to reveal its first-ever display-equipped smart glasses, codenamed Hypernova, along with an advanced gesture-controlled wristband. In addition, Meta plans to showcase the next version of its voice-only smart glasses in partnership with eyewear giant EssilorLuxottica.
Hypernova: Meta’s Next-Gen Smart Glasses
According to reports, Hypernova will feature a small digital display embedded in the right lens, allowing users to view text notifications and basic updates. The display will have a field of view of about 20 degrees, appearing as a fixed digital window.
Priced around $800, the smart glasses will be developed in collaboration with EssilorLuxottica, combining Meta’s tech expertise with the eyewear company’s design excellence. This product follows last year’s showcase of Orion AR glasses, Meta’s early augmented reality prototype.
The Gesture-Controlled Wristband
Alongside the glasses, Meta is also launching a wristband powered by sEMG sensor technology. This innovative wearable translates electrical signals from the hand into digital commands, allowing users to control the glasses through gestures.
While similar to Apple’s Vision Pro technology, Meta sees its wristband as an important step toward fully functional AR glasses in the future. However, testing hasn’t been without challenges—accuracy can drop when the band is worn loosely, performance may differ between users, and long sleeves sometimes interfere with signals. Despite this, Meta has started inviting developers to test both the glasses and wristband.
Building an AI-Powered Wearable Ecosystem
Meta is also encouraging third-party developers, especially those working with generative AI applications, to build tools and experiences for its wearable ecosystem. By integrating AI, Meta hopes to create a smarter, more interactive user experience with its smart wearables.
Third-Generation Voice-Only Smart Glasses
In addition to Hypernova, Meta is expected to introduce the third generation of its voice-only smart glasses, developed again with EssilorLuxottica. A recent filing describes them as “The Next Generation Smart Glasses,” featuring capacitive touch sensors for gesture-based controls, making them more intuitive than ever.
Final Thoughts
With Hypernova smart glasses, a gesture-based wristband, and the third-gen voice-only smart glasses, Meta is clearly positioning itself as a leader in wearable technology. The Connect 2025 conference could mark a turning point in how we interact with digital information, blending style, AI, and everyday usability into one ecosystem.
